Second hand pc but trouble with speakers working?

hi i have recently brought a second hand pc, it had no speakers with it, i have some jbl speakers from a previous pc i have plugged them in to the right jack at the back, when i boot up the pc i hear it say "the pc will now boot from hard drive" but when it has booted up i can't hear any sound file or online sounds ect, i have no volume link at the bottom right where clock is, but when i go into volume controls i only have option for WAVE, MIDI SYNTH, AND CD AUDIO, they are all turned up but still nothing, when i go into control panel and sound and audio devices it says SB AUDIGY AUDIO FFE0 but the device audio is faded out i cant turn it up there and speaker settings and advance on is faded out, how could i get these speakers to work?
